"Indian home cooking" gets used as a mood word. It is actually a specific way of cooking, with a method you can point at, and it is not the same cuisine as the one most people in Britain have eaten in restaurants. Here is what it means on the plate, and what it means when a box arrives at your door.

Key takeaways

  • Punjabi home cooking, not a pan-Indian restaurant menu.
  • Masala built from scratch every batch — no standing base gravy.
  • Milder than a restaurant curry: spiced, not hot.
  • Portioned as a meal — sabzi, dal, roti or rice — not as a sharing platter.
  • Delivered frozen across UK mainland. Some areas we cannot reach.

What does "Indian home cooking" actually mean?

It means the food an Indian family eats on an ordinary Tuesday: dal, rajma, chole, kadhi, a seasonal sabzi, roti or rice. Not the dishes a household cooks twice a year for a celebration, and not the dishes a restaurant built to impress a table on a Friday night.

That distinction is the whole of it. Restaurant Indian is celebration food. Ghar ka khana is Tuesday night.

How is it different from a British curry house?

By method. Almost every curry house in Britain builds from one standing base gravy, with individual dishes separated at the pass. A home kitchen has no base gravy — each dish begins with its own onion, tomato, ginger and garlic masala, cooked down until the fat separates.

Curry house Home kitchen
Base One master gravy for the whole menu A masala built per batch
Finish Cream and butter, for richness and speed A tadka poured over at the end
Heat Set to order, often high Milder by default
Portion Sharing dishes for a table A single complete plate
Occasion A night out Dinner, most nights

What is in a Saakshi's Kitchen meal?

A complete plate rather than a component. A sabzi or a dal, portioned as one person's dinner, cooked with the staples that live in an Indian kitchen: haldi, jeera, dhania, rai, hing, ajwain, methi and garam masala, alongside dal, atta, rice and ghee. The full ingredient list sits on every product page.

Spices are ground and blended in our own kitchen rather than arriving as one all-purpose curry powder, which is why the dal and the rajma do not taste like versions of each other.

Is the food spicy?

It is milder than a restaurant curry. Household food is spiced for eating, not for showing off — it is cooked for children, parents and grandparents at the same table, several nights a week. If you have only had Indian food in restaurants, that is usually the first difference you notice.

How does the food arrive?

Frozen. Meals go into the freezer soon after they come off the hob, so the box you open holds the batch we cooked. Keep the meals frozen, cook or reheat straight from frozen until piping hot, and do not refreeze once defrosted.

The practical upshot is a freezer that is already sorted: dinner on a weeknight without a decision, a delivery slot or a queue.
