What Is a Tiffin Service? The UK Guide | Saakshi's Kitchen

A tiffin service delivers home-cooked meals to your door on a repeating schedule — usually weekly — so you have proper dinners ready without cooking them yourself. The word comes from the Indian dabba tradition: a stacked steel tin carrying a home-cooked meal from a family kitchen to whoever is eating away from home. In the UK, a tiffin service is the modern version of that: a home kitchen cooks the food, and it arrives at your address.

What is a tiffin service?

A tiffin service is a subscription for home-cooked meals. You choose how many meals you want a week, the kitchen cooks them, and they arrive at your door. It is not a takeaway — you are not ordering one meal on impulse — and it is not a recipe box, because there is nothing to cook from scratch.

The distinction that matters most: a restaurant cooks for a night out, a tiffin service cooks for a Tuesday. Restaurant Indian food is celebration food — rich, heavy, built to impress. Ghar ka khana is what an Indian family actually eats on an ordinary weekday: dal, a sabzi, rice or roti, something on the side. That is what a tiffin service is for.

What is the difference between a tiffin service and a takeaway?

Three things, and they all come down to how the food is cooked.

  • The masala. Almost every curry house in Britain works from a standing base gravy — one master sauce made in bulk, with dishes separated at the pass by ratios of chilli, tomato, cream and sugar. It is a clever system built for speed. A home kitchen does not have one. At Saakshi's Kitchen the masala is built from scratch every batch: onion, tomato, ginger and garlic, bhuno'd properly, then a real tadka at the end the way dal is finished at home.
  • The repertoire. A takeaway menu is a greatest-hits list. A home kitchen runs a rotation — dal, rajma, chole, kadhi, whatever sabzi is in season.
  • The rhythm. A takeaway is a decision you make when you are already hungry. A tiffin service is a decision you make once, and then dinner is handled.

How much does a tiffin service cost in the UK?

Most UK tiffin services land between £8 and £12 a meal. The number that actually matters is the weekly or monthly one, because a tiffin service is competing with your food shop, not with a single takeaway.

At Saakshi's Kitchen you build a box and the price per meal falls as the box gets bigger. Subscribing saves around 20% against one-off boxes, and delivery is free over £70. The honest way to judge it is to work out what you currently spend on a weekly shop plus the takeaways you order when cooking does not happen — that combined number is the real comparison.

Two things worth checking with any provider before you subscribe, because they are where people get caught out:

  • What the price is after the introductory discount ends. A first-order discount is normal. A price you would not have accepted at full rate is not a bargain.
  • Whether delivery is included at your order size.

How big are the portions?

This is the question people actually want answered, and it is the most common complaint about meal delivery generally — portions that look fine in a photograph and leave you hunting through the cupboards an hour later.

Saakshi's meals are portioned as a meal for one adult, not as a sharing dish and not as a side. A typical dinner is a curry or sabzi with rice or roti. If you eat a large dinner, plan on one portion plus something simple alongside — the way you would at home.

Is the food frozen, and does that matter?

Saakshi's meals are delivered frozen. Keep them frozen when they arrive, then cook or reheat straight from frozen following the pack instructions until piping hot. Don't refreeze once defrosted; if you do defrost, eat within 24 hours and reheat once only.

People often assume frozen means second-best. The reason we freeze is the opposite: the food is cooked in small batches in our Brighton kitchen and frozen straight away, at the point it is finished — rather than being cooked and then sat in transit and a fridge for several days before you eat it. Freezing is also what makes the weekly rhythm work: your freezer holds the week, and you decide on the night.

How much freezer space does a week of meals take?

A realistic guide: a week of individual meals occupies roughly one drawer of a standard UK freezer, stacked flat. If freezer space is tight, order a smaller box more often rather than a large box once — most people who run out of room ordered for a fortnight in one go.

What is a dabba, and is it the same thing?

Broadly, yes. Dabba is the Hindi word for the tin itself, and by extension the meal inside it. In Mumbai the dabbawalas built an entire delivery network around collecting home-cooked dabbas and getting them to offices across the city. "Tiffin", "dabba" and "mess" all describe the same underlying idea — a home-cooked meal, made in a home kitchen, delivered to someone eating away from home. UK services use the words more or less interchangeably.

Who uses a tiffin service?

  • Busy professionals who can cook but rarely have a free evening to do it properly.
  • Families who want a weeknight dinner that is not a compromise — and who often order the same few dishes on repeat because everyone eats them.
  • Adult children ordering for elderly parents, often to a different address entirely. Milder spicing, softer textures and dishes they already recognise matter far more here than variety.
  • Students and people living alone, where the alternative is usually not home cooking — it is skipping dinner or ordering in again.

How to choose a tiffin service

  1. Check the delivery area first. Everything else is academic if they cannot reach you. Saakshi's delivers across mainland UK; we do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands or the Scottish Isles.
  2. Ask how the food is cooked — batch-cooked in a home kitchen, or assembled from a standing base gravy.
  3. Look at the weekly and monthly price, not the per-meal price, and check what it becomes after any introductory offer.
  4. Check the food hygiene rating. Every UK food business has one and it is public on the FSA register. Saakshi's Brighton kitchen is rated 5.
  5. Check the rotation. Monotony is the most common reason people cancel a meal subscription — more common than price.
  6. Read the reviews on the actual dishes, not the service in general.
