Feeding the NHS: Saakshi's Tiffin Brings Home-Cooked Indian Meals to Doctors, Nurses and Their Families in the UK

Jasjit Singh Ahluwalia

Nobody should come off a twelve-hour hospital shift and then have to cook. Saakshi's Tiffin delivers home-cooked Indian meals, frozen, across UK mainland - so NHS doctors, nurses and their families can eat properly on the days when cooking is simply not going to happen.

The problem with dinner after a long shift

Hospital rotas do not respect mealtimes. Shifts run over, days and nights swap around, and the supermarket is shut or unbearable by the time you are out the door. What fills the gap is usually whatever is nearest - a meal deal, a takeaway, toast. Not because anyone prefers it, but because cooking a proper meal needs the two things a shift has already taken: time and decision-making.

The fix is not a better recipe. It is moving the cooking to a different day entirely - and better still, to a different kitchen.

A freezer that is already sorted

Saakshi's Kitchen cooks in small batches in our FSA 5-star kitchen, freezes each meal, and delivers the box to your door. It goes straight into the freezer, and that is the whole trick: on the night you crawl in at nine, dinner is already decided. Cook or reheat straight from frozen until piping hot, following the pack instructions. Once a meal has defrosted, never refreeze it - eat it within 24 hours.

There is no prep, no shopping list, no washing-up mountain. The only decision left is which dish - dal tadka, rajma, butter chicken, matar paneer - and that is the good kind of decision.

The frozen part is what makes it work for shift patterns in particular. Food planned for Tuesday does not go to waste when Tuesday turns into a late finish; it simply waits in the freezer for whichever evening actually happens. A box ordered once can cover a whole rota cycle, days and nights alike, without anything needing to be eaten by a deadline.

Cooked for families, spiced for families

Everything is ghar ka khana - the everyday food an Indian household cooks for itself, made from family recipes by the same hands every time. It is spiced, not hot: the chilli sits back at the level a family actually cooks at, so the same box feeds a doctor on nights, a partner on earlies and children who want dinner at six. Each dish is portioned as a complete meal - sabzi or curry with rice or wholemeal chapatis - not as a sharing platter that needs three sides bought separately.

There is a full vegetarian rotation, our kitchen-cooked meats are halal, and every product page carries its full ingredient list, so you can check any dish before it goes in the box.

Khaana khaya? - feeding the people who look after everyone else

In an Indian family, "khaana khaya?" - have you eaten? - is how care is asked about. A tiffin box is that question in physical form. Plenty of our orders are placed by parents for a doctor son or daughter three cities away, or by NHS staff stocking the family freezer before a run of nights. 79% of orders come from returning families; once the freezer routine starts, it tends to stay.
