Saakshi's Kitchen: Bringing the Comfort of Home to the UK with Indian Home Cooking

Simi Gajala

Homesickness has a taste, and it is usually dal. Ask anyone who grew up on Indian home food what they miss most after moving to the UK and the answer is rarely a restaurant dish. It is the everyday plate: dal chawal, rajma, a sabzi, a paratha off the tawa. Saakshi's Kitchen cooks that food — Punjabi home cooking, from one FSA 5-star kitchen — and delivers it frozen across UK mainland, so the comfort of home is in your freezer rather than a flight away.

Nostalgia on a plate

Comfort does not come from richness; it comes from recognition. The dishes we cook are the ones a household cooks for itself — dal tadka, rajma chawal, chole, kadhi, seasonal sabzis, and yes, the butter chicken and biryani for the weekend end of the week. Every recipe is a family recipe, passed down and cooked the way our family cooks it, so the same dish tastes the same every time. That sameness is the whole point: it is what lets a Tuesday dinner in Manchester taste like a Tuesday dinner at your mum's.

Khaana khaya? Feeding people is how our families talk

“Khaana khaya?” — have you eaten? — is the first question an Indian parent asks. Feeding someone is how care gets expressed, which is why so many of our orders are placed for somebody else: a student in their first term away, an elderly parent who no longer wants to cook, a new mum with no hands free, a son who has just moved cities for work. A stocked freezer of home food says “we are thinking of you” in a language the whole family understands.

If you are sending food to someone, build them a box around the dishes they grew up on, and check their postcode first — we deliver across UK mainland, but there are some areas we cannot reach.

One family kitchen, not a different kitchen every night

Everything we send out is cooked in small batches in our FSA 5-star kitchen, by the same hands, from the same recipes. We cook for your family the way we cook for our own — the masala built from scratch for each batch, the dal finished with a proper tadka, the heat kept at the level a family actually eats at. It is spiced, not hot.

The number we are proudest of is not a star rating: 79% of our orders come from families who order again. For food whose entire job is to taste like home, coming back is the only verdict that counts — though the 4.6 stars from 800+ verified reviews are welcome too.

How the comfort of home travels

Long-cooked food travels best frozen, so that is exactly what we do: each meal is cooked, then frozen, and delivered frozen to your door. It goes straight into the freezer and waits for the evening you need it — then you cook or reheat it straight from frozen until piping hot all the way through, following the pack instructions. Once a meal has defrosted, eat it within 24 hours and never refreeze it.

That is what makes this different from ordering in: the comfort is already in the house on the night the homesickness hits, not forty minutes and a delivery fee away. If you want it on a steady rhythm, our tiffin service works like the dabba tradition the food comes from — a regular delivery of the household rotation.

Sharing it is the other half

Indian home food is cooked in one pot and eaten together — it is built for the table, not the tray. A box in the freezer means you can feed a friend who drops by, a flatmate mid-deadline, or the whole family on a Sunday without anyone standing over the hob. That, more than anything on the plate, is what “the comfort of home” actually means.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send Saakshi's Kitchen meals to someone else?

Yes — many orders are gifts to students, parents and new parents. Deliver to their address, and check their postcode first; we deliver across UK mainland but cannot reach every area.

Does the food taste like proper home cooking?

It is proper home cooking: family recipes, per-batch masala, a real tadka, cooked in small batches in one FSA 5-star kitchen. 79% of orders come from returning families.

How does delivery work?

Meals arrive frozen. Keep them frozen, then cook or reheat straight from frozen until piping hot. Once defrosted, eat within 24 hours and never refreeze.
